Stump Grinding · Goldsboro & Eastern NC

Stumps ground out, below the grass line.

A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a mower-blade breaker and, in time, a home for termites and ants. Our stump grinder chews it down below ground level, so you can put topsoil and seed over the spot and forget it was ever there.

We grind single stumps in a back yard and whole lots full of them, and we clean up the chips when we're done.

Grinding vs. pulling the stump

Grinding turns the stump and the top of the main roots into wood chips, right where it stands. It's fast, it doesn't leave a big crater, and it's far easier on your yard than digging the whole root ball out.

Full stump removal, pulling the stump and roots with an excavator, makes sense when you're building right on that spot or need the ground completely clear. We have the equipment for both, and we'll recommend whichever fits what you're planning for the space.

What happens to the chips

Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil roughly where the stump was. We can rake them into the hole and haul the extra away, or leave them for you. They make good mulch for beds once they've aged a bit. If you're planting grass, we'll leave the spot ready for topsoil.

Old stumps and new ones

We grind stumps from trees we've just taken down and ones that have been sitting in the yard for years. Old stumps are often softer and grind quicker. If you've got several around the property, doing them all in one visit is the most cost-effective way to go.

What’s included

  • Grinding below grade, typically several inches under the surface
  • Surface roots near the stump ground out too
  • Chips raked back into the hole, extra hauled away on request

What affects the price

Every job is priced on site, for free. These are the things that move the number, so you know what we’re looking at when we walk your yard.

Stump diameter

Measured across the widest point at ground level.

Number of stumps

Each extra stump in the same visit costs much less than the first.

Access

Whether the grinder can drive right up to the stump, or it sits behind a fence or on a slope.

Chip cleanup

Leaving the chips is cheapest; hauling them away adds a little.

Common questions

Stump Grinding questions.

Still wondering? Call Eddie at 919-738-3333.

How deep do you grind?

Deep enough that you can cover the spot with topsoil and grow grass over it. For a garden bed or a structure right on the spot, tell us and we'll go deeper or pull the stump out entirely.

Will the roots grow back?

Most trees won't sprout again once the stump is ground. A few species, sweetgum among them, can send up suckers from the roots for a season. Mow or clip them and they'll give up.

Can you grind a stump from a tree someone else cut?

Yes. We grind any stump, whoever took the tree down and however long ago.
